In each realm, each sort of animal has its monarchs, or "Beasts Royal," a "king and queen beast" of every type. These are especially fine specimens, so perfect they are barely mortal. They may not be truly sapient, but they have the bottomless well of wisdom befitting the totem guardian spirit of their kinds, for they are the vessels for the manifestation of the divine spirit of their species in the region. When actively possessed, a beast royal acts with both its own natural impulses and with the intelligence of that divine spirit.
There will likely be "back-up" specimens in reserve; should a Beast Royal be killed, a successor will soon be transformed from merely fine to utterly perfect, thus developing a new suitable host for the divine spirit. Thus, while it is recommended that a hunter not slay the king or queen beast of any specie, if they are killed, it need not be a permanent disaster.
Even when not possessed and intelligent, the king and queen beast will act with supernatural understanding, as if with clairvoyant foresight, to guide their fellow beasts to the benefit of their species and the realm as a whole.
Each realm will also have a high king and high queen or emperor and empress, which represent all the creatures of all sorts of the realm. In some realms, when these monarchs die, the king and queen of any species may vie for the succession, while in others the lineage is preserved by a particular species.
Likewise, there is a king and queen of every sort of tree and even herb in each realm.
