A Knot of Sleepers (which SEE, half way down Snake Sub-Index page) of winter worms, composed of dozens or even hundreds of winter snakes snoozing together through the summer in a cold cave, may actually lower the temperature of their surroundings, making an ice cave in the midst of a complex of warmer tunnels. Winter worms may share their dormitories, taking turns by season with regular "summer snakes," which sleep in the same cave during the winter.
Ice Slugs (which SEE) are often found in the winter worms' lair, and may be responsible for this remarkable cooling. Others hold that some ice slugs are actually a larval form of ice snake, those winter worms formed of animate ice.
